Initial faculty expertise is in areas such as regenerative medicine, human performance, biofunctional materials, medical devices and biosensors, neural engineering, protein engineering and synthetic biology. The Department of Bioengineering will be housed in the Knight Campus’ spectacular new building that opened in 2020. A second 175,000 square foot building is scheduled for completion in 2025.

In addition to transformative investments in Eugene, UO is developing its presence in Portland, OR at both downtown and northeast campuses, creating an urban laboratory for professional degree programs managed in close partnership with industry expertise.

Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Research Advanced Computing Services, the Research Systems Engineer will provide leadership in the design and implementation of hardware and cluster software subsystems including Infiniband networking, GPFS parallel file systems HPC queuing systems. The Research Systems Engineer serves as a member of the systems team to facilitate the administration; integration and maintenance of parallel high- performance computing systems; clusters; and other systems and peripherals, including advanced filesystems and InfiniBand networks. Responsibilities include maintaining and modifying large-scale cyberinfrastructure, diagnosing and resolving issues and determining solutions for system modifications.

The Research Systems Engineer will provide direction and strategic planning for security on the computational and data systems that support UO research needs. They will be the departmental expert on security, and primary interface to the ISO office. In addition, this position will be responsible for security decisions at a high level which have university-wide implications and impact. The Research Systems Engineer is responsible for understanding university-level research strategies and developing system security that provides needed security for current workloads. The design of security configuration for the HPC systems must also have the flexibility to support changes in restricted data as the University's research needs change. To enable the near- and long-term security goals of the HPC systems the Research Systems Engineer will develop, implement, and assess performance of the security configuration.

The Research Systems Engineer will also have a leadership role in the Research Advanced Computing Services departmental cloud strategy. Using their experience in moving workloads to cloud only platforms or providing bursting capabilities from the Talapas cluster to cloud resources, the Research Systems Engineer will evaluate and decide on cloud strategies based on their understanding of UO research needs. This position will have the authority, in discussions with researchers, to grant exceptions to the RACS cloud policies.

The Research Systems Engineer works with Information Services and Research Advanced Computing Services team members and leaders to accomplish complex system design, integration, deployment, administration projects, system performance analyses, and problem resolution. This position provides technical assistance and consultation for faculty, researchers, students, and technical staff on the use of high-performance computing platforms. The Research Systems Engineer will independently decide on the modification of systems based on researcher needs to provide the best possible support.

The Research Systems Engineer will be comfortable working and consulting with interdisciplinary researchers to evaluate the technical needs for computational research. Based on those needs, the Research Systems Engineer will make independent decisions on the design of new hardware to support researchers from a broad spectrum of departments and centers.

The Research Systems Engineer will be required to represent departmental and University research interests as they work with colleagues from across various support providers including the Research Advanced Computing Services team, Information Services, Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, and University Libraries. The Research Systems Engineer will work closely with advocates across campus to provide the best computing environments to support all research endeavors including data science, machine learning, and AI research.

Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of relevant experience or 6 years of relevant experience. Relevant experience must include:
• Experience with Linux systems administration in an HPC environment, AND/OR
• Experience supporting a diverse computational researcher user base

Preferred Qualifications
• Demonstrated experience in the design and deployment and management of Cyberinfrastructure (CI) systems in support of research
• Demonstrated history working with SLURM or other HPC scheduling system
• Demonstrated experience working with parallel and other distributed storage systems
• 2 years of experience with Active Directory, LDAP or other identity/access management services
• 2 years of experience in data and systems security in HPC and other research CI environments
• 2 years of experience in providing support for HPC workloads in the cloud
