Department Summary
Transportation Services is a unit within Campus Services in the Finance and Administration portfolio. The VPFAs Campus Services group is comprised of units, including Transportation Services, that support the university by providing essential services to the campus community.
Established in 2012, Transportation Services mission is to provide access, mobility, and parking services in support of campus. The department strives for a future where we are an industry leader in providing people and goods safe travel to and through campus with minimal impact to the environment while meeting campus operational needs.
Transportation Services is an auxiliary unit that covers its expenses and operations through revenue generation, largely through permit sales, meter revenue, events and citations. Transportation Services' annual budget is approximately $4.3 million. The department maintains more than 3,800 parking spaces on or adjacent to campus in more than 60 lots and two multi-level parking garages.
Position Summary
The Transportation Planner serves and essential role in planning, development, and implementation of campus transportation programs, policies, and infrastructure projects in support of campus operations. The incumbent will work closely with Transportation Services leadership to create plans, set goals and actions, collect and analyze data, and seek funding for projects that help support the departments mission and achieve its vision. The incumbent will regularly meet with regional and campus-wide stakeholders to solicit input and feedback, as well as analyze and incorporate technical data in support of Transportation Services goals, objectives, and actions.
Minimum Requirements
Transportation Services will consider any equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, education, and experience to meet minimum qualifications. These minimum qualifications include:
Bachelors degree in planning or related field
1 or more years of experience creating and implementing transportation demand management (TDM) programs
Demonstrated experience in stakeholder survey development, distribution, analysis, and reporting
Demonstrated comfort with public speaking
Experience in technical writing and analysis
Knowledge of principles and methods for illustrating and processing geospatial data
Proficiency with MS Office Suite, including: Word, PowerPoint, Excel
Professional Competencies
Transportation - Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by car, truck, bus, bicycle, and other relevant modes, including the relative costs and benefits. Strong understanding of transportation challenges, best-practices and creative solutions.
Rules and Regulations - Knowledge of applicable transportation rules and regulations relevant to transportation planning, including, but not limited to parking regulations, street restrictions, etc.
Customer Service - Knowledge of principles and best practices for providing customer services. This includes stakeholder engagement, explaining complex transportation planning principles and data to layperson audiences, etc.
Administration - Knowledge of business principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, and coordination of people and resources.
Traffic Engineering Principles - Knowledge of the practical application of traffic engineering principles as related to transportation planning.
Communications and Media - Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods related to transportation planning projects and programs. This includes alternative ways to inform via written, oral, and visual media.
Regional collaboration and relationship building Demonstrated ability to work well with others and use of diplomacy when working through different and/or competing goals, strategies, and actions.
Preferred Qualifications
2 or more years of experience working within a higher education institution transportation department or similar environment
Masters degree in planning or related field
Experience working with campus plans and principles
Experience with multi-modal traffic counts
Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, such as: InDesign, Publisher, etc.
Knowledge and proficiency with ArcGIS, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Qualtrics
Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models
